6. Make the Character Decide The First Act ends when the character makes a decision. He decides to do something about that annoying Inciting Event that bumped into his life a few chapters back. In essence, he is deciding to step through the doorway between worlds. He’s about to leave his Normal World (perhaps literally, perhaps metaphorically) and enter a brand new world of adventure, full of challenges he’s never before faced and which he will never again be the same after having overcome. This will propel him into the First Plot Point, which we’ll discuss in the next chapter.
How is the Lie making your character unhappy or unfulfilled? 3. What Truth does your character Need to disprove the Lie? How will he learn this Truth? What does your character Want more than anything? How is his plot goal related to or an extension of the Thing He Wants? Does he believe the Thing He Wants will solve his personal problems? Is the Thing He Wants holding him back from the Thing He Needs? Does the Thing He Needs preclude his gaining the Thing He Wants—or will he only be able to gain the Thing He Wants after he has found the Thing He Needs?
If he’s known for his bravado, don’t have him strut down the street. Have him pick a fight with five toughs—and win (or nearly). Although optimally, you’ll be able to work your character’s Lie right into the Characteristic Moment, sometimes doing so just won’t be possible. You can only keep so many balls in the air while still maintaining logic within the plot, which means you may occasionally have to postpone the introduction of the Lie until you’ve crossed off a few of your beginning’s other requirements.
