It is at the level of action and commitment that change will be possible. It is for women and men of good will to denounce the situation of domination and discrimination and distorted relationships. We have need for the solidarity of all men and women (Parvey 1983: 72 citing Ela, 1980, 1986: 72). 41 Thus, true inculturation of the gospel and the liberation of Africa was firmly placed in the ‘speech of women’ and their active participation in the theological project.
However, as my own experience as a researcher and church worker have incontrovertibly revealed to me, if to no one else, easy solidarities whether based on religious confession, gender or race are not to be had in this highly charged arena. The binary divisions which have been favoured by some Western and Circle theologians in their encounter do not encourage a sympathetic reading of Africa’s recent history, nor a helpful model for future theological discourse across cultures, nations and ethnicities.
Articles by Circle members have been published in Concilium, The Way, The International Review of Mission and a variety of other journals, especially those of the WCC (The Ecumenical Review), LWF, EATWOT (Voices of the Third World ), the Kinshasa Theological Weeks, CIWA ( Journal of Inculturation Theology), the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA) (African Christian Studies) and the Circle’s own occasional in-house journal AMKA, which means ‘Wake up’. I have been most fortunate and privileged over the last few years to meet Circle members in a variety of locations and to attend as a guest the second international Circle conference in Nairobi in 1996 where many of the participants were generous with their time and conversation.
