A yellow throw and another colorful striped one on the bench punch up the muted tones. Sasha Adler, a design director at Nate Berkus Associates, updated a headboard that had “grandma fabric on it” with sassy yellow velvet. The 18th-century writing table was originally stained wood, which Adler modernized with a black lacquer finish. A stag head commands attention over the charcoal wool-velvet upholstered headboard in this moody master bedroom in a vintage Edgewater condo. Superdark turquoise walls create a restful cocoon effect in the bedroom of this light-drenched condo (a vintage stainless steel Milo Baughman bed contributes to the feeling).
On the other side of this glamorous-feeling room, the owners chose a mirrored 1940s console and two Art Deco chairs (one is shown) that they had lacquered and reupholstered with mohair and crushed-velvet fabrics. In a bold move, they also lacquered an iconic Eames stool. The ultramodern staircase, comprising glass, ebony-stained treads, and powder-coated steel, adds it own edgy elegance. In the same room, the juxtaposition of contemporary art (including felt heads by Jonah Koppel peeking out of the corner) with the condo’s original moldings and windows (which the owner had carefully refurbished) create a homey gallery feel.
Interior designer Arden Nelson started her scheme for the dining room with the tiered chandelier. A large mirror adds to the glitz, while dark wood furniture keeps the look grounded. In this early-1900s Glencoe cottage owned and decorated by photo stylist Leslie Dyke, two antique worktables pushed together create a large square dining table; the candle chandelier was originally a bell-jar terrarium. In a suburban dining room by Frank Ponterio, a warm, citrusy color palette perfectly complements the view through the picture window, while a similarly inviting painting by Ira Yeager finishes the look.
