The word ‘device’ suggests something slightly underhand that lesser historians might resort to, and for anyone to ‘write himself into his own history’ seems to imply unwarrantable self-indulgence.

On a personal level, the events of one’s life could be explained by reference to ‘Providence’, or the direct intervention of God in the affairs of everyday human life. Such divine interest ensured that any morally bad behaviour was immediately punished. In a seventeenth-century tract ominously entitled God’s Judgements upon Drunkards, Swearers and Sabbath-Breakers, the case of John Bone, a coach-man, provides one typical example. Already notorious for swearing and drinking, Mr Bone became so drunk one Sunday, when he should have been at church, that he fell off his coach and was trampled to death by his horses.

As Herodotus’s professional successor, and as one who wrote self-consciously as a historian, Thucydides deliberately and explicitly distances himself from any tradition of mere entertainment. Some writers are concerned, not so much with truth as with attracting immediate attention, but his own work, he explains, has been written ‘not as an essay which is to win the applause of the moment’. 8 It will, he believes, prove of lasting value, because it contains a moral lesson of universal applicability.
