In 1721 the Danish government sent an expedition to search for traces of the vanished Scandinavian settlements. The farms and churches were deserted. A new European (Danish) colony was created and integrated within the Kingdom of Denmark. Since 1979 the 54,000 Greenlanders, mainly Inuit (formerly called Eskimos), have enjoyed home rule. Whilst Danish remains in administrative use, the Inuit language is now increasingly used in most spheres. England and Sweden regained their independence at an early date. Norway was lost to Sweden in 1814 following the Napoleonic War. This left Denmark with the former Norwegian Atlantic possessions of the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland. As a consequence of pressure for home rule in the 20th century, Denmark has granted increasing autonomy (and total independence in the case of Iceland) to these territories. Today Denmark, an EC member, is a prosperous and modern democratic state which successfully combines pride of tradition with a broad world outlook.

Just as even the largest European states can no longer cope alone with issues which have assumed a supra-national dimension, so are they also less able to satisfy the growing aspirations of their ethnic and linguistic minorities and the populations of absorbed territories which have a memory of former independence. The balance has therefore shifted in favour of self-determination for these 'stateless nations'. They themselves, rather than some distant central authority, generally know best how to address their own problems and development needs.
